Northern Rail train services cover a large area of Northern England, stretching from Carlisle and Newcastle in the north to Whitby, Scarborough, Hull and Cleethorpes in the east, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe in the south, and Chester, Liverpool, Blackpool and Workington in the west. In between, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Preston, Blackburn, York, Doncaster and Bradford amongst many towns are served.

With a train line crossing the Pennines and winding through the Peak District and Lake District, as well as running along coastlines, Northern Rail has some of the most impressive and scenic train journeys in Britain. The world-famous Settle to Carlisle line is served by Leeds to Carlisle trains; the Lake District is served by the Cumbrian Coast Line and the Windermere branch; services to Whitby and Scarborough run through the North Yorkshire Moors and along the East Yorkshire Coast; the Newcastle – Carlisle line glides down the Tyne Valley; and the Peak District is bisected by the scenic Hope Valley Line from Sheffield to Manchester and the line to Buxton.
